Hand Thrown Stoneware Face Cups & Ugly Pottery Mugs
These hand thrown funny pottery mug sculptures were sculpted in the north woods of Minnesota by master potter Josh Boock. Each is an origianl pieace of American Folk Art. Thrown and formed in the 1800 style of black southern folk art face jug pottery. Two will never like exsactly alike, because I do not use any sort of molds.

These hand thrown coffee cups are one of a kind. Not only gerotesic, But humoris and beutiful at the same time. Defenatly a unique conversation piece!!

Thrown one at a time on the potters wheel. I then sculpt them individual by hand rolling diffrent sized clay coils and balls, that I sculpt into dents I make in the leather hard cup. (wet clay, but fairly rigied).

I NEVER use any type of mold, these are all hand built, one at a time by my loveing hands.

When I start construction on another cup the; shape, texture, and size, inspire a unique exspression to match each cup's personality.

I build the eyes and teeth out of porcline.

I glaze the piece in a rich, deep and bright glaze. Often useing shinos, copper reds and crystaline yellow glazes.

I then scrap the teeth down to refeal the raw porcline under neth.

This scraping leaves a plaquie texture to the porcline.

Rock Tooth ugly toby beer mugs
After doing a ton of these face cups and ugly jugs. I started trying to think up new ways of produceing, new and orginal exspressions.

So I started incoperateing polished stones into the grins of my face mugs.

This white crystal rock and crystal point cup holds about 16 Oz. of liquid.

The exspression and the way the rocks are incorprated into his smile make this one of my favorite cups.

His shocked look and the huge crystal point, make him a truley uniquie coffee mug.

The shino glaze on this toby mug highlights how a glaze surface can pull carbon out of the atmosphere of a reduction fired kiln.

The gold teeth in these coffee cups are gold plated pewter.

Animal face jug coffee cups
These animal head coffee cups are each thrown indvidually, just like the rest of my work.

To me they look like a cross between; a animal and a human. Usally when I think of a animal, I don't think about them haveing a exspression.

But when I started doing these animal pottery mugs, I found my self thinking about their exspressions and moods.

This blue turkey coffee cup features a cobalt blue freaking glaze.

His beak is a slab that I added onto the hand thrown cup.

I like the un-natural coloring of this turkey mug. I think the freakleing blue glaze adds to the sculptures personality.
